Vancouver, British Columbia, September 2002 George DeVault (2002 class) checks out the plant life at Hazelmere Organic Farm in British Columbia

The 2002-2004 class of Food and Society Policy Fellows traveled to Vancouver, British Columbia (BC). Known for its vibrant local food scene, Vancouver provided the ideal setting for fellows to sharpen their media skills and meet some of the people - farmers, chefs, academics and activists - who fuel the region's demand for high quality, locally grown food.

Arriving in time for Vancouver's "Feast of the Fields", the fellows tasted BC's diverse bounty at the gastronomic gathering of the region's finest chefs, food producers, brewers and wineries. A half-day tour of urban food projects followed, as fellows were introduced to cutting edge projects that address food and job security needs in Vancouver's poorest neighborhoods. The fellows spent the remainder of time touring various farms that characterize B.C.'s lower mainland.
