Minneapolis, Minnesota, December 2001 Some 2001 fellows visit with a Dutch dairy farmer Jan Meerkerk

In December the 2001 fellows met for one and one half-days of media communications training in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The program's contracted media firm, Hickman + Associates, conducted a media training designed to help fellows interact effectively with media. The workshop included sessions on different ways to pitch a message, media dos and don'ts, and on-camera television tips.

Netherlands and Belgium, October 2001

The 2001 Food and Society Policy Fellows, W.K.Kellogg Foundation representatives and IATP staff traveled to Europe for one week to learn about new developments in the marketing of community-based agriculture.

During their four days in the Netherlands the fellows met with representatives from the Sustainable Finance Section of Rabobank, visited farms implementing innovative conservation programs, and spoke with officials from the Dutch Ministry of Agriculture and the Environment. The Fellows also stayed at bed and breakfast farms to experience one of the Netherlands's regional tourism initiatives. The tour ended with one day in Brussels meeting with representatives from the agriculture committees of both the European Parliament and European Commission to discuss the changing agricultural policies in the European Union.
